About Honewood
Honewood makes one thing, and makes it well: a rolling knife sharpener built for the person who cooks every night and was never taught to sharpen. Not the whetstone enthusiast. Not the collector with a drawer full of angle guides and strops. The rest of us - the ones who kept sawing at tomatoes with a blade that went dull years ago and quietly decided that's just how knives are.
Who we built it for
A sharp knife is safer, faster, and honestly more pleasant to use. Getting one shouldn't require a hobby, a $200 machine, or ten years of practice. So we built Honewood for the cook, not the gear guy - a restaurant edge in under a minute, with no technique at all. Snap the blade to the marked angle, roll ten passes a side, wipe it, and cut like the edge is new. The magnet holds the knife at exactly 15� or 20�, so there's nothing to guess and nothing to get wrong.
What we fixed
Rolling sharpeners aren't new. You can find them for thirty dollars all over the internet, and we bought a stack of them. They fail in two predictable places, and we filmed every one so we wouldn't forget. First, the magnet: it's supposed to hold the knife so you don't have to, but the cheap ones are too weak - the blade drifts, slips, or drops mid-stroke, and you're back to guessing. Second, the roller: the disc should glide, but the bearings seize halfway through, so it stutters and grinds instead of rolling clean.
Honewood exists to fix exactly those two things. A magnet strong enough to hold a chef's knife upside down. Steel bearings that keep rolling smoothly, pass after pass. And real industrial diamond doing the actual work - a #400 diamond disc to rebuild the edge, a #1000 ceramic disc to polish it. It sharpens chef's, paring, santoku, cleavers and outdoor knives, in any steel, including hard Japanese blades. (Serrated knives and scissors are the two it won't touch.)
An object worth leaving out
We also refused to make one more gadget destined for the back of a drawer. Honewood is solid walnut, with a weight and a grain that make it something you're happy to leave on the counter between dinners. That was deliberate: a tool you can see is a tool you'll actually use - and use often. The people who've bought one for a parent tell us the same thing. It doesn't get put away.
